FORTRESS BOXING catch up with former British Middleweight Champion Wayne Elcock at his Birmingham Boxing store in Sutton Coldfield. A hot spot in the Midlands for some of the countries brightest boxing stars to get their hands on the best boxing equipment found anywhere in the country.
So Wayne, thanks for having us in store today, Its a pleasure to be around such high quality boxing equipment. I Feel like a kid in a candy store. Anyway, how is life outside the ring treating you now and how has the transition been from boxing as a professional, to running your own boxing store?
No problem and to be honest life is good since retiring. After making the decision to stay around the sport I have so much passion for. I made the decision to set up a few new businesses which all centred around the sport, mainly using money earned and saved from my own career in the paid ranks. I feel this has stopped me missing the sport half as much as many do and thankful I could come out of the sport healthy and fit. Its given me the opportunity to now give back my experience and share it with others, through my Ringside shop, Box Clever Coaching business and also my Academy Amateur Boxing Gym.
Obviously you are still very much involved in the sport through all of the avenues you mentioned. Therefore, how do you feel british boxing as a whole has come on in recent years, from amateur through to the pro ranks?
I don't feel its has changed dramatically in the case of the training methods, as many are still the same as when I was learning the sport. Although I do believe that modern sports science has helped improve the sport greatly. Its enabled further education on what the body needs to excel, and the help of then choosing the right supplements to help recovery with any extra demands. The new amateur no head guards ruling for seniors will make it easier for a smoother transition into the paid ranks. As well as the bonus of Britain's top amateurs now being paid and able to work full time at the Team GB HQ in Sheffield, I feel has helped reduce the difference between the two codes. Although they are still very much separated, if not so much in the gym but by way of how both organisations work with each other. This is an area where there are bridges yet to cross.
You mentioned the advances in sports science and the introduction of supplements in the sport, is this an area that your Ringside store focuses on, and how important for you is having quality equipment as a boxer? Yes without a doubt as for me the store was created to help any boxer succeed to the highest level by using my own experience to bring in the best tried and tested equipment available on the market and offer high quality recovery and workout supplements to always keep the fighter at the top of his game.
That being said, today you finally got your hands on our FORTRESS BOXING Fastwraps. What are your thoughts on our revolutionary product?
Yes I was very impressed with the FORTRESS BOXING hand wraps (fastwraps), well thought through and put together very professionally. I felt they gave great support in all the right places and as I myself suffered with my hands thoughout my career, I wish something like this was around when I was active in the sport. I feel they could of prolonged or at least saved many of the injections I had to endure late on in my career. A big thumbs up from me and hope the wait is not too long as I would love them to be made available to add more value in my store.
Wayne thank you for having us in store and it was an absolute pleasure to meet you.
